Now that the summer and fall months are over it can be easy to forget about our healthy active lifestyles and slip into lethargy instead. Our brains have to get their serotonin from somewhere and if we don’t exercise regularly we tend to get it from heavy foods instead. Stay active this winter with winter activities that keep the heart rate high and the cheeks rosy, read on to find out more. 

Skiing and Snowboarding 

Even if you live in a warm climate there is usually somewhere in a local town or city with a dry ski slope where you can play and practice. If you live in a colder region you’re in luck, winter is a great time for these activities. 


Skiing and snowboarding is an excellent way to enjoy the winter weather and keep fit at the same time. If you don’t know how to do it, lessons are available and  it’s a skill you don’t forget easily. Moreover, if you know how to do this you can always take trips to fantastic locations like the alps. 

Camping and Hillwalking 

Camping and hillwalking shouldn’t be limited to the summer and fall months, nature takes on a unique beauty at this time of year, with snow-capped mountains and spectacular views. Pick a hill you’re familiar with and make a weekend of it, you’ll be surprised how different and lovely it looks in winter. 

Although it’s a recommended outdoor activity in winter it can be hazardous. Cold weather and short days means you have to pay close attention to where you are and what supplies you have left. Remember to take plenty of food and batteries for lights. Let someone know where you’re going and bring extra charge for your devices.

Ice Fishing 

If you like fishing you don’t have to give up your activity in the winter months. There are plenty of rivers and lakes that still permit fishing even in the coldest parts of the year. If, however, you want something more adventurous, why not try ice fishing. 

You may have to travel to a colder region for ice fishing but there are some excellent situations. Normally you would rent out a hut with a hole in the ground that reaches the water. You can light a fire and sit around with

Snowshoeing is an excellent alternative to skiing and snowboarding, especially if you don’t feel like you’ve got the knees for skiing. It involves using flat netted shoes to walk through the powdered snow and enjoy the landscape. This is a very suitable family activity that is practical and enjoyable. 

If you want to snowshoe properly you will have to travel to Canada, Norway, Finland, or Austria. These places have the best snowy landscapes to get into and breath the fresh cold air. Couple this with a winter wonderland break over the Christmas season to complete a memorable and health-focused year.
