Sometimes the end of the month tends to take forever waiting for pay day to arrive. Over the past few months we have been trying to think of and implement some ways to help us save money and bring costs down. Here are some of the things we have been doing –

Setting a realistic budget

We used to go month by month without setting a budget and just go along and spend on what we needed to etc. Now we set a monthly budget and do our best to stick to this ! I like the challenge of trying to stick to budget , looking for alternatives etc.

Cut down on food shopping

This can save loads of money month by month. We started shopping at lower priced supermarkets which has made a massive difference , the supermarkets are great as the lower price doesn’t compromise quality. I have also started buying own brand products and to be honest I haven’t come across many own brands that didn’t taste exactly the same.

Getting organised

I have found that organisation is the key with everything when it comes to saving money. For example for day’s out if you make a lunch and take it with you it can save you £20/£30 buying lunch out and about. Also meal planning is key , if you have a plan and buy the food then it’s straightforward. If you don’t have a plan you will end up getting a takeaway or eating out. You are less likely to do this is you have food in the fridge and a plan.

Have a clear out and make some money from items you don’t use

This is so important , we had so many things that we were not using or no longer needed. We had tons of baby bits we no longer needed so we put them on selling sites and Ebay. It’s fab as we recycled which is great for the environment and also made some extra cash to save.

If you own your own home then you may be surprised at how much value in your property has increased year by year. I found this fantastic calculator to help check how much the property has gone up in value over the years you can check here.

Ensure that you utility bills are cost-effective

I never really shopped around or changed electric / gas suppliers I just stuck to what I knew and stayed with the same provider year on year. The price would go up each year and I would think it’s only by a couple of pounds and to save the hassle of changing etc. We now search and check and change providers regularly and it does save a lot of money as it all adds up.

As you can see there are loads of things you can do to help save money in general or save for a special occasion. I would love to know if you have any hints and tips that I haven’t mentioned here for ways to save money.
