However, the seemingly simple task of choosing a car seat isn’t as easy as it sounds. With so many options available, as well as rules and regulations to consider, choosing a child’s car seat can seem incredibly daunting.

With this in mind, I’ve gathered some simple tips and advice that you can follow that will help you choose a car seat for your child.

Check your vehicles’ guidance first

Does your car support car seats with Isofix? Or the LATCH system? If your car can support these car seat systems then much of your car seat search is already completed. All-new, modern vehicles have Isofix or LATCH capabilities, so if you choose to utilize them, check the measurements of your backseat first and consult your car owner’s manual which will tell you where the attachments are in your vehicle.

Consider the other passengers

Primarily, you want your child to be safe and comfortable. However, before you rush out and purchase something that is the height of luxury, it’s worth considering the other passengers who’ll also be sharing the backseat with them. A car seat with a large base or one that is particularly wide could make other passengers uncomfortable, and in some cases possibly jeopardize their safety.  Take plenty of measurements to the store with you and consider how many children you have and who else will be traveling alongside the car seat.

Choose a seat that will grow with them

We all know that children grow up far too quickly. And the last thing you want is for your child to outgrow an expensive car seat before you’ve had a chance to get your money’s worth. The solution is simple, choose a car seat for your child that has a system that grows with your child. The option to make adjustments to the base, the straps and the headrest is what you need. It’ll save you money and keep your child safe.

Decline hand-me-downs

As parents, we’re all about saving money, so when people offer us hand-me-downs it’s a welcome gesture. However, when it comes to car seats, you should decline. Modern car seats are tested to the highest safety standards. Standards that are changing all the time. Purchasing a new car seat ensures that your child’s car seat is up-to-date and wholly safe. Also, the hand-me-down could be damaged and may not be beneficial in a crash scenario.

Purchase from a reputable supplier

When you buy a car seat, choose a supplier who offers ongoing support, advice and assistance with the seat. Someone who can show you how to adjust things as the child grows and give you peace of mind!
