- As your family grows or your lifestyle changes, you can start to feel like your home isn’t big enough. When you need more space, you have a few different ways you could expand your home to accommodate your requirements. Whether you have some spare land that you can build on or you need to convert some existing space, you can create more living space in your home. With more usable space, you can do whatever you want with it, from adding an extra bedroom to creating a fun room that you can use for music, movies, hobbies or anything else.
Convert Existing Space
If you don’t want to do any proper construction, consider whether your home has any space that could be converted. It might not be usable as living space at this moment, but you may soon be able to use it in any way that you see fit. Some spaces that could be converted include your attic, basement or garage. You may even have a room that you’re currently using in one way that you can convert to become something else. For example, a guest bedroom could become a home office or even another bathroom if you feel like your home doesn’t have enough.
Expand an Existing Room
Sometimes you may have a specific room in your home that you feel isn’t large enough. If this is the case, you might consider expanding this room so that it’s your desired size. There are a couple of ways that you might make an existing room bigger. One option is to move internal walls. You can move or even completely remove a wall to create an open space. Of course, before removing a wall, it’s best to consult with someone who knows what they’re doing. You don’t want to create a structural disaster by removing a wall that really needs to be there. It’s best to get a professional involved in your project.
Install an Annexe
An annexe is a fantastic option if you’re thinking of adding a self-contained unit to your home. You might do this to have somewhere for guests to stay or it might be something that you’re considering so that your parents or other elderly relatives can live with you. An annexe is the perfect solution for elderly care if you want to have your family close to you but still allow them to live their lives independently. It can be a separate unit behind or next to your house, or you might consider converting your garage, attic or other space. It could also be built onto the side or back of your home.
Build a Conservatory
A conservatory can be a great addition to your home. It’s especially good in the spring and summer, but you also have a few heating options so you can use it in the colder months too. If you have a garden that you want to be able to enjoy more or you want to make the most of the sunshine during the summer, a conservatory can be affordable and allow you to do both of these things. You don’t need to have a lot of space to build a conservatory, and you can use it as an extra lounge or dining space.
Add a Garden Cabin
If there is space in your garden, a cabin could be something to add if you want more space. A garden cabin can be used in a number of ways, from a separate guest house to a writing nook or artist’s studio. You could also use it as a workshop, or perhaps a summer cabin to sit in when it’s warm and sunny. You can find prefab cabins that are easy to set up and that you could even build yourself if you’re able to do a bit of DIY.
Build an Extension
Adding an extension onto the side or back of your home is another option to expand it. You can also consider building upwards and adding another floor, even if you add just one room. If you’re thinking about an extension, you might need planning permission before you go ahead with it. However, many small extensions no longer need planning permission. You do still need to let your local authority know, however, so that your neighbours have a chance to lodge any concerns if they have them.
You can expand your home in a few different ways. Think about what sort of space you want to create and why so that you can choose the best option.
