I recently read a really interesting survey that was carried out my Ferratum. The survey is centered around the differing career goals of Millennials to the Gen X generation.

I have heard the word Millennials flying around lately and was wondering who this referred to. It has been up for debate, but most people agree that a millennial is someone that reached adulthood early in the 21st century. The survey is focussed on millennials aged between 18 and 34 in 2018.

I found some interesting facts within the survey these were –

3 in 5 millennials want to start their own business

I think this is really positive and should be encouraged , I always wanted to start my own business but didn’t like the element of risk that it involved so I went down the uni route and did a business degree instead and went in to teaching. It wasn’t until I was 34 and started my blog which led to me being self-employed did I take the risk and set up my own business. So this I find really interesting as I am part of the Gen X generation.

69% of millennials wish they had more access to training at work

This really surprises me as you would think that in this day and age and with the forever changing world of technology etc there would be loads of training on offer and it would be accessible for all.

I was really surprised to hear that “when faced with barriers to their development at work, many millennials will choose instead to take up a course alongside their main job. In fact, 55% of the millennials we spoke to are planning to start a new course in the next 12 months – the majority of which being courses in business and management”

55% of millennials are planning to start a new course in the next 12 months, most popular course being business and management

In my opinion this is fantastic having a degree in business myself I find the broad spectrum of professions you can go in to with business amazing. Also with the business world being mostly online these days , it’s easy to set up a business. The extra training would be very handy for this.

Millennials are twice as likely to be willing to work weekends in a second job compared to Gen X

This did not surprise me with the cost of living going up and the zero hour contracts this is essential for most people.

30% of Gen X are unwilling to take the risk of setting up their own business with “fear of failure” as the main reason.

I can really relate with this as I wanted to set up my own business for years and I am a Gen X , I always felt I couldn’t as it was too risky and I would fail. I am so glad that I finally took the plunge.

Have you read the survey ? I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
