It’s that time again , half term ! Trying to keep the children entertained and also trying not to break the bank ! Here are the free or low-cost activities I have found in and around Pontypool this half term.

Blaenavon heritage centre – Tuesday 26th feb – March 1st 

A variety of arts & craft activities over the February half term week

• Tuesday 26th Feb & Friday 1st March: Get ready for Earth Hour with Head4Arts – free drop-in origami and craft sessions inspired by nature.
• Wednesday 27th Feb: Make a real Bees wax candle with the Queen Bee Honey Company. £1 each per craft activity.
• Thurs 28th Feb: Story & Craft session in the Library at 2.30pm (pre-booking required) free entry.

Big pit Blaenavon – Wednesday February 27th 11am-4pm  – Bats, Rats and Cats Crafts

Some animals worked underground at Big Pit helping the miners, others were not so welcome. Come and find out about the animals you might have found underground and in the surrounding area. £2 per child.

Big pit Blaenavon – Friday March 1st 11am-4pm – Dragons and Daffodils Crafts and Face Painting

Join us to celebrate St David’s day, wear your rugby shirt, your traditional Welsh costume or even dress as coal miner.
£2 per child.

Cheeky monkeys Cwmbran-  Tuesday 26th February – Half Term Slime Station!

Slime Workshop at 11am on February 26th! Children will be able to decorate their own slime pot, personalising it with their own choice of gems, tapes, pens, stickers and 3D shapes. Once our pots are designed, they will begin to mix the ingredients to make your own slime!

Tickets include free entry into Cheeky Monkeys soft play area and cafe too! Slime workshops are suitable for children aged 4 plus. All children will need an adult with them during the session.

Slime Lab Abergavenny girls guide hall  – Mythical Slime – Monday 25th Febuary 2pm-3.30pm 

Make myths come to life and spend 90 minutes creating two slime pots including:
Dragon Snot Slime– Do you have what it takes to train your dragon and defend our slime lair? Unicorn Poo- Add a little magic to create this Unicorn Fluffy slime and learn the unique ‘Unicorn Poo’ slime handling skill! Meet the Dinosaurs Pontypool Indoor Market – 12pm-4pmThursday 28th Feburary 

The dinosaurs are returning to Pontypool Indoor Market – Pontypool Market are proud to present… Dino4Hire pop along to the indoor market to meet, Ronnie the Trex, Chip our raptor, Baby dinosaurs, Baby dinosaurs Raptor and stegosaurus, Baby dinosaurs Raptor and stegosaurus and Large Utah Raptor. Entry for the event will be FREE.

A Dragon’s Tale (Show and Workshop) – Monday Febuary 25th £4 per family Canolfan Garth Olwg Centre Pontypridd 

A Dragon’s Tale

Foolishly John throws the strange googly eyed fish back into the river. What has he done! The Fish grew and grew and grew until…Well why not find out by coming to watch this magical show by Theatrix Arts. They perform this enchanting story based on a legend through puppets, changing scenery, music and sound effects. Then meet the puppets and create you very own Dragon Puppet.

The performance and workshop are suitable for families and children aged 4 +

Cwmbran shopping centre February 25th-29th 11am – Around the World Craft Workshops

Cwmbran Centre is heading off on an adventure around the world and are looking for intrepid explorers to join us along the way! Throughout February half term they are running FREE craft workshops inspired by the world that we live in. All workshops will take place in Monmouth Walk between 11am – 4pm daily and will be run by our workshop captains. There will also be FREE face painting!

Cineworld cinema – Cwmbran mini morning films 

These are fab and only £2.49 each to watch a chosen film that is showing – they are usually on at 9.45am/10am you will need to check closer to the half term for details.

Tredegar House – Half term fun – on all week Monday – Friday 10.30am-4pm

Turn back the clock and live a day in the life of the servants at Tredegar House. Explore the warren of rooms below stairs and discover the responsibilities of the service staff of the 19th century.

There will also be a chance to tick off one of the 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾ and make a bird box to take home with you or get stuck into some arts and crafts in the Servants’ Hall.

Bird box making: 25, 26, 28 February, 1 March (£4 per box).

Alice in Wonderland: Film/Meet & Greet February 25th – Newbridge Memo 2pm-5pm 

A relaxed screening of the Disney classic , includes children’s crafts and meet and greet with the characters. £3 per adult £1 per child. Book at www.newbridgememo.co.uk

Saturday March 2nd – Pontypool active living centre – St David’s Day celebrations 

A parade will start from 8.45am and go on to the leisure centre. At 9.30am acts will begin on stage in the leisure centre hall. There will be stalls , Welsh music , Welsh taster session , face painting , sports activities and loads of fun for the family. This is a free event.
