So here it is the summer holidays and I’m frantically trying to find something to keep the days filled and keep the little ones busy. It can be so expensive finding something daily to do , I have been scouting out all the free activities around Pontypool and surrounding to compile this list.

Paws For Ponthir Fun Day 21st July 12pm – 6pm

Fun day for the family and dog show , arts and crafts , Disney characters , face painting , pet stalls and birds of prey. Food also available. Adults £2 , kids £1 and parking £2.

July 24th – 28th Aug Recycling crafts at-  Blaenavon World Heritage Centre Free entry 

This is running every Wednesday throughout the holidays at 11am-4pm. Summer Recycling Crafts with the Council’s Recycling Team. Make Wind Spinners, Bubble Snakes and Mobiles using recycled materials. Free entry.

Daily, 20 Jul – 3 Aug Soft Play & Face Painting – Big Pit

FREE soft play in the Play lab and Face Painting £1 per face paint. Suitable for under 5s only. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

27th July 11am-5pm Open day – All creatures great and small

Annual Open Day is back! Entrance will be £3 for adults and £1 for children. There will be a variety of activities for the whole family to get involved with!

2nd August Family fun day – Caldicot town centre

Annual family fun day in the heart of Caldicot town centre. With lots of fun, games and activities to keep your little ones occupied throughout the day, including, displays from local sports and community groups in our display arena. With live dinosaurs, Aardman Animation Workshop places, Alpacas, Guide dogs!! Main arena performances throughout the day, balloon modellers and much more.

August 4th – 11th – 12pm-4pm – Big butterfly count – Big pit

Visit Coity Tip and look around Big Pit and join in with this nationwide survey to count how many butterflies you spot and see.
FREE. Supported by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.

7th August – 11am – 2pm – Fairy Exploring Story Trail – Caldicot castle

There are loads of these story telling events on with different themes over the summer. Join the Louby Lou team every Wednesday in the summer holidays, as they bring you a collection of exciting, imaginative outdoor story trails to enjoy with your family at the wonderful Caldicot Castle.

Take a trip to the secret gardens at Caldicot Castle with Louby Lou’s this summer and go in search of the magical fairies who live there. Knock on tree house doors, collect the enchanted dust and make a visit to Fairy Sparkle who will help you to cast your own wishing spell. If you’re very lucky, she may even tell you a little story.

There will be two trails available on the day.

AM: 11am – 12pm
PM: 1pm – 2pm
£5.00 per child This trail is for children aged over three years old. Younger siblings are welcome to attend if you feel they may also enjoy the session.

7th August 12pm-4pm – Zest in the park – Pontypool park

I went to this last year with the kids and it was such a fun free day out. National Play Day, the 7th August,12 noon until 4 pm for free family fun.
Including Green Meadow Community farm animals , fun games, free fruit, face painting, bouncy castle, fitness, climbing wall and more!

August 8th 9am – 11th Aug 2pm – Bristol balloon fiesta 2019

The annual Bristol Balloon Fiesta takes place in Ashton Court, which is only about 6 miles from Winford Manor. Book early to make sure you get a room.

August 9th 11am – 3pm – Go Wild @fourteenlocks – fourteen locks canal centre

Free family fun day for all ages. Learn about the stunning wildlife that lives on our doorstep including the amazing people that help protect it. There will be animal interactions, forest school, bugs, moth traps, story time, hedgehog rescue, facepainting and more! August 16th 10am-12pm – Fortnerf – Pontypool leisure

What better way to get the kids active this summer than to get them involved in a real-life Fortnite-inspired Nerf War?
Combining the hugely popular Fortnite craze with the timeless classic Nerf game, this is the perfect opportunity to get your kids up off the sofa and into action whilst making new friends and amazing memories.

Cardiff Bay beach

We go every year , it is a bit further afield but an amazing day out. There is a beach , paddling pool , funfair , games and food stalls all in one place – the beach and paddling pool are free.

August 18th 10am – 5pm – 999 emergency services day – Caldicot castle and country park

Caldicot Town Team are thrilled to once again host the annual 999 Emergency Services Event, taking place in the grounds of Caldicot Castle on Sunday August 18th 2019. Join them for a fun day filled with demonstrations from all of our emergency services, including Gwent Police, South Wales Fire & Rescue, Mountain Rescue, Cadets, Wales Air Ambulance, Vintage vehicles and much much more. Enjoy yourself with our many food caterers, coffee stalls and childrens rides and attractions.

Entry is free for those on foot, with £5 parking on site. Disabled parking is also available on site at £5.

Fossils take thousands even millions of years to form…but you don’t have to wait that long to make an instant fossil at Big Pit.

Free swimming for children ages under 17 years – Pontypool active living centre 

Tuesday 11am-1pm , Thursday 2pm-4pm , Saturday 12pm-4pm– all public sessions – see timetable – children can swim for free as long as they have an active living card which you can get from reception.

Pontypool active living centre – Go bounce and treasure island £2 entry for each 

Treasure island soft play is fab for the little ones and all enclosed with no huge drops to keep them busy. Go bounce is also fab to burn off some energy. The go bounce times are released weekly so you need to keep an eye on their Facebook page.

Undercover beach festival park – all summer

Undercover beach fun at festival park with toys and buckets and spades. Open daily from 11om – 4pm. They also have the free entry Owl sanctuary and a fab play park – you can make a day of it !

Forest walks /  mountain walks with the BBQ for lunch

I have written about various forest and mountain walks before- fab for a day out with loads of fresh air and freedom. Just pack a picnic and set off. We love keepers pond there is so much to explore and a lovely stream to paddle in on the hotter days. My two love feeding the sheep too who are so friendly. Also we take the portable Gas Bbqs and that’s lunch sorted.

I will add more events as I find them so keep checking in.
