We are massive Julia Donaldson fans and we have read every book and seen every film. We were so pleased when New Theatre got in touch and invited us along to see Stick man live on stage.
Stick man at the New Theatre is a musical adaptation of the picture book by Julia Donaldson. The story is centered around the Stick and his adventures when he gets lost in the woods and how he finds his way back to his stick family.
I absolutely loved the minimalist vibe of the show as it was just like the book. The stage simply had musical instrument and props that were all played by one of the actors , the tree house and some props to go with each scene. The minimalist approach worked really with this show as this is what I loved about it.
I was looking forward to seeing how they would create the costumes and what they would look like. I loved how the actors played the sticks and mirrored what they were feeling and doing. The little ones loved it too.
The characters were fantastic there were only three actors but this worked really well. The little ones loved the songs and dancing and joined in loads . I love how interactive the show was , they were asking the little ones things and getting them involved , they also loved this and really got in to it. This built up the excitement for them and the comedy aspect was so fab too.
The story line followed the book really well with a couple of added extra songs that we enjoyed. The 60 minute running time is perfect and the time went really quickly we didn’t want it to end.
I would really recommend this show if you are a fan of Julia Donaldson and the books. More information about the show can be found here.
