We are huge Julia Donaldson fans here , we have read every book and seen every film. We were so pleased when New Theatre got in touch and invited us along to see The Gruffalo’s child live on stage.
Gruffalo’s child at the New Theatre is a musical adaptation of the picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The story is centrred around the Gruffalo’s child and his quest to find the big bad mouse , such a gorgeous story line.
I absolutely loved the simplicity of the show as it was just like the book. The stage simply had a cave , rocks and trees with the backdrop of the moon. The minimalist approach worked really with this show as it mirrored the theme of the book.
I was looking forward to seeing how they would create the costumes and what they would look like. We weren’t disappointed, the costumes were fabulous and easy for the little ones to identify what they were. The owl was my favourite costume!
The characters were fantastic there were only three actors but this worked well. The little ones were really using their imaginations during the show and loved the songs and dance. They were joining in and doing all the actions. I loved that there was some humour in there for the adults too , the characters were comical especially the snake.
The characters really did get the children and everyone involved too which I liked and this built on the excitement for them. We also loved that stick man was included in the show as he is one of our favorites too.
The story line followed the book really well with a couple of added extra songs that we enjoyed. The 55 minute running time is perfect and the time went really quickly.
I would really recommend this show if you are a fan of Julia Donaldson and the books. The show is running until Sunday the 5th of August and is suitable for age 3+. It is a fab show to see as a summer holidays treat and guaranteed the adults will love it too. The show is 55 minutes long so just right for the little ones.
There is still time to go and see the show today and tomorrow with various show times which can be booked here.
*We were given complimentary tickets to the show in return for this honest review. All thoughts and opinion are my own.
